What is Davis Dyslexia Correction?

Davis Dyslexia Correction provides tools to overcome problems with reading, writing, and attention focus. These methods enable adults and children to recognize and control the mental processes that cause distorted perceptions of letters and words. When students are sure that their perceptions are accurate, they can resolve the underlying cause of their learning difficulties. The methods they learn build upon their strong creativity and imagination

What is involved in this program?

Step one is an assessment or screening to determine the ability of the client to perceive multi-dimensionally and tailor the program to the client.

Step two is to help the client to learn how to perceive accurately and correct misperceptions at will. This is done through perceptual and kinesthetic exercises outlined in the book, "The Gift of Dyslexia" Copyright © 1994, 1997 by Ronald D. Davis.

Step three is to help the client to learn and master the basic symbols of reading and writing by de-triggering confusion with the alphabet, punctuation and other written symbols. Abstract words are then mastered by creating the concept in clay along with the word.

How does the program affect a person's self esteem?

When dyslexic students recognize their mental talents, they develop a renewed sense of self esteem and confidence. This usually occurs in the first few days. When they start to employ study methods which capitalize on their talents, progress is very rapid.

Yes. Davis Facilitators have training in specialized methods designed to help students gain self control over their energy level. Through the program, students will master concepts of time, sequence, consequence, order, and disorder.

How is the Davis method different from other approaches?

The Davis methods address the root cause of dyslexia. The client first learns how to control at will the confusion caused by their dyslexia, and then they are able to correct the causes or "triggers" of dyslexia (letter, punctuation, words, math symbols etc.).

The Davis program uses the creativity and natural learning style of the client, so that learning is meaningful. It is also fun. When clients start to employ study methods which capitalize on their talents, progress is very rapid.

Most other programs address only the symptoms of dyslexia, and rely on drill and repetition, which dyslexics often find boring and ineffective. The Davis method does not rely on instruction based on phonics because dyslexics are picture thinkers and have difficulty thinking with sounds and words.

What can a client expect to gain?

The basic tools of literacy, including:

  • The ability to recognize and correct disorientations or confusions at will.
  • The ability to focus attention.
  • The knowledge of how to eliminate confusions in words and symbols.
  • Increased self confidence and ability in reading, writing, math, or physical skills.
  • A method of learning that can be used throughout life. Other remediation and therapy programs will work more effectively and faster with these tools.
